Your Guide to Cradle Mountain, Tasmania

Whether you’re a mountain lover, snow bunny, hiking enthusiast or someone who wants to tick a Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Listed area off your bucket list, then Cradle Mountain is the perfect destination for you my fellow travelrino.

I recently visited Cradle Mountain on my Tasmanian Road Trip Honeymoon (yep, I recently married the love of my life in a beautiful rustic/bohemian wedding in Sydney – more on that in a later blog though). After disembarking from the Spirit of Tasmania in Devonport and attempting to reclaim our land legs and finishing some breakfast, we set out on the leisurely 1.5 hour drive from Devonport to Cradle Mountain.

Cradle Mountain is a gorgeous alpine region hugged by stunning rainforests and grasslands filled with such diverse plant life. One minute you’re driving or hiking through dense rainforest with moss covered trees surrounding you and the next minute you’re in barren grasslands with shrubbery clinging to the blanket of grass- it’s truly a unique spot in the world.

We stayed at Cradle Mountain Lodge, which if you’re wanting a complete technology detox and a gorgeous mountain cabin experience, this place is the JACKPOT! We absolutely loved that there wasn’t a T.V in our rooms and that we only had internet access when we were in the main lodge. There are board games and cards available at reception if the weather turns bad and keeps you indoors or you just want to spend some good quality time with the people you’re travelling with. We grabbed the UNO cards and reignited a a love for one of our favourite childhood card games.

Things to do at Cradle Mountain

As keen hikers, we were absolutely spoilt for choice on the type and duration of hikes at Cradle Mountain. As the weather wasn’t the greatest while we were there, we decided to do the shorter 20 minute track near the lodge called The Enchanted Walk and do the Dove Lake Circuit which took us 2 hours to complete.

Note: if you are wanting to do the Overland Track or any of the longer day walks, do not attempt these during winter or bad weather. We were in Tasmania at the start of June and it rained the entire time we were there and even snowed the night before and morning of the day we left Cradle Mountain. The Overland Track is for experienced hikers and I would really urge everyone to make an honest assessment about their hiking abilities before starting out on this hike – noone wants to be stranded in tough terrain in the middle of winter when the weather can (and does) change dramatically.

You can’t go to Tasmania and not check out the infamous Tasmanian Devil. Devils@Cradle is a conservation sanctuary located only a few minutes from Cradle Mountain Lodge. A tour costs $20 per adult and I would say it is definitely a must if you’re wanting to know more about these little guys and the keepers here are extremely knowledgeable.

3 words: Waldheim Alpine Spa. Fancy a spa overlooking a Wilderness World Heritage Listed region? Need I say more? Do yourself a favour and make sure to call well in advance of your stay to book yourself in for a bit of relaxation – we missed out on getting some down time at this spa as it was completely booked out. But if we did, the Private Sanctuary (the spa) and the Rebalance Ritual had our names written all over it.

Cradle Mountain is definitely a must for anyone travelling to Tasmania. The tech detox, beautiful hikes and down time will have you leaving a new person (or just less stressed, who doesn’t want that?!).

Get outside & stay inspired,
