Guide to Broken Hill, Australia’s Outback Gem

Don’t miss

  • History of Broken Hill Walk
  • Mundi Mundi Lookout

Broken Hill, the quintessential outback frontier mining town of yesteryear. Broken Hill’s deep mining roots originated in 19th century as frontiersmen threw their hats into the silver, zinc and lead mining industries which lead to the town becoming quite prosperous.

With the seamless integration of historical and modern architecture, it feels as though you are entering a Hollywood film set – something from WestWorld where you know you’re in the “real world” but you can’t help but feel like you are stepping back in time. In fact, Broken Hill and the surrounding areas have been used in a few Hollywood and Australian Films such as “Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert”, “A Town Like Alice”, “Mission Impossible 2” and “Mad Max 2”.

One of the big draw cards for Josh and I was the Mad Max 2 Museum located in Silverton, just 20 minutes north of Broken Hill. If you’re a fan of the cult classic, then this place is definitely a must. You will be treated to original and replica film memorabilia, behind the scenes footage of making of the movies, plus two owners who are probably the most passionate Mad Max fans in the world. Oh, and bonus: it’s dog friendly. Just make sure to bring cash with you as they do not have eftpos facilities yet. Entry for an adult is $10 and the gift shop items are reasonably priced.

After checking out the Mad Max 2 Museum, make your way 5km out of town and stop in at this lookout which featured in the movie. The view seems to never end and if you’re lucky you might catch a glimpse of some willy-willys, or as I like to call them “Dirt Twisters” (willy willys are actually their name….I know, I’m  surprised too).

Pack a picnic basket and remember to bring the poop bags if you’re travelling with your dog and check out the Titantic Memorial in the local park. I know what you’re thinking “it’s a bit out of place having a Titantic memorial in the middle of the Aussie outback”, but it’s a pretty sweet reason why there is one. The local Broken Hill town band wanted to show their respect to the band members of the Titantic and erected the monument.

Want to learn more about Broken Hill’s history? There is a 1.7km casual stroll where you can learn more about the local history, culture and meet interesting figures, like the worlds tiniest miner and the first female blacksmith, who helped to create Broken Hill. It’s the perfect post dinner walk and if you’ve brought along your pooch, they’ll also enjoy themselves! Fritz definitely loved being able to stretch his legs and sniff around after a day of driving.

Places To Eat

Fancy a bite to eat for lunch or dinner? The Palace Hotel serves up some pretty tasty pub meals and is probably the only place in the outback that serves a cosmopolitan or margarita. It’s also got some pretty impressive murals on the walls including a copy of Botticellis Venus on the ceiling.

For the best coffee and breakfast in town head to The Silly Goat.  The receptionist at our hotel recommended this café to us letting us know it’s a favourite spot for breakfast with the locals. And Josh and I can see why. The coffee was one of the best coffees we had throughout our trip and the breakfast was delicious and extremely filling.

Dog Friendly Accommodation

We stayed at Desert Sand Motor Inn in a dog friendly room. It was affordable and in a great location, we could walk to the main street and the local park to exercise Fritz’s legs. We opted to stay in a motel on this leg of the trip rather than in our swag because during January temperatures can reach late 30’s to mid 40’s degrees.

Final Thoughts…

If you want a real outback Australia experience then you can’t skip visiting Broken Hill. It’s dog friendly, the people are lovely and there’s a lot to check out.
