Top 6 Movie Trilogies to Watch During Lock-down to Escape Reality

If there was ever a time to lose yourself in an alternate universe courtesy of Hollywood, 2020 during the coronavirus shutdown is the time to do it.

Let’s face it, the outside world can sometimes be a scary and (more often than not) frustrating time during this pandemic. Endless reports of people not being able to do the right and courteous thing (I’m looking at you anti-maskers) and the constant updates is enough to make anyone want to retreat from the real world. So why not shut out all of that bs and allow yourself to be transported to worlds where coronavirus doesn’t exist and anything is possible with these 6 movie trilogies.

1. The Lord of the Rings

The Lord of the Rings is hands down one of my all time favourite fantasy movies. Not only are the filming locations absolutely to-die-for amazing but the overall story is one of hope – something I’m sure we all could use a little bit more of right now.

The lowdown: there is a ring that will mean the end of all creature-kind and it’s up to a fellowship of individuals from different backgrounds, cultures and beliefs to rise over evil and save the day.

Watch if: you love epic adventures, larger than life battle scenes and enjoy rooting for the underdog.

2. Harry Potter

We all need a little bit of magic in our lives, and let’s be honest, we all would have loved to have been sent to Hogwarts as a child!

The lowdown: Harry has some beef with some old, nose-less dude that killed his parents and then tried to kill him when he was just a baby. Harry and his trusty side-kicks always seem to find themselves involved in some mystery and have to work together to save the day (while also providing many upbeat, funny, magical moments).

Watch if: you want to be transported to a place where magic rules and you can live out your dream of being a witch or wizard through the TV screen.

3. Back to the Future

If you ever wished you could time-travel and see what it was like to live in a different time, then this bad boy is for you!

The lowdown: Marty and Dr Emmett Brown end up going on adventures back in time and into the future to try and set things right, with some very hilarious situations thrown in the middle. But these two time travellers have to be careful not to change too much of what’s happened, or they risk their own survival in the present.

Watch if: you love an epic 80’s soundtrack, want to see how people thought the future would be like (I’m still pissed we don’t have a hoverboard yet!) and want a feel-good adventure movie.

4. The Matrix

I remember the first time I saw these films I was in absolute awe with the film making! Pure cinematic genius! Much has been discussed over the years about what the Matrix movies symbolise, but I think we can all agree it’s about transformation – and whatever that looks like for you.

The lowdown: There is a small group of woke rebel humans fighting against a system trying to keep human beings controlled. Neo has a choice: take the red pill and join the rebels into some epic badassery or take the blue pill and go back to being a sheep.

Watch if: you want some epic, philosophical inspirational storyline with a side of kickass kung-fu and guns-a-blazing action washed all down with a bottomless glass of Keanu Reeves (let’s be honest, we’re all thirsty for some Keanu).

5. The Mummy

An oldie but a goodie and if you LOVE history like me, especially ancient history – you’re going to enjoy going on this adventure!

The lowdown: Archaeologists set out on a mission to find the lost treasures of the ancient world only to discover there are others wanting to get their hands on these treasures for all the wrong reasons. What follows is some ancient curses, baddies getting what they had comin’ and saving the world.

Watch if: you wish you could be out exploring the worlds ancient historical sites.

6. Shrek

This list wouldn’t be complete without mentioning the most epic animated trilogy ever – Shrek! If there is one movie trilogy that will bring out the feel-good vibes while sharing positive messages of loving yourself and being kind to people – this is it!

The lowdown: a lovable Ogre and his talking donkey friend go on various adventures to save the fairytale kingdom. There are a lot of references to childhood fairytales (which is epic) and has plenty of adult jokes thrown in (making it not just for the kiddies).

Watch if: you love movies with a rockin’ soundtrack, need some positive vibes and love a good ol’ animated movie, this is going to be your jam!

There are a lot of fantastic movies out there that I could have added to this list, but these are my all time favourites that I find myself come back to time and time again whenever I am needing to escape reality for a little bit.

If you have any movie suggestions, let me know in the comments below!

Until next time friends, please stay safe, take care of yourself and remember: we are all in this together.

Much love and light,
Lara X
